Nordic Walking 5 mile walk

The weather last night was perfect for walking and 12  members turned up at Nordic Walking in Lydiate.  We completed a five walk in 1.5 hours, that’s 18 minute miles.  That is the longest walk we have completed on a Monday night so we must be getting fitter.

You do need to complete a short course  with Active Sefton before you can join the group.  Our walks in the summer are from Lydiate and are for 1.5 hours. Our walks in the winter are shorter and last for 1 hour.  We also offer an hourly walk every other Monday morning from the Maghull Meadows Leisure Centre.

Active Sefton have Nordic Walking groups most days of the week in different parts of the borough.  If you want more details go onto the Active Sefton website or visit the group support desk on a Tuesday morning

Active Sefton Walking program

Active Sefton held a launching event for their new Independent Walk Route pack on 3rd April.  The Mayor of Sefton attended and we were invited to give an overview of how we have worked with Active Sefton to provide groups for our members which include:

  • Nordic Walking
  • Cycling
  • Dance Fit

From 16/4 on the Group Support desk we will have copies of their latest pack of Independent Walk Routes which includes 12 walks from previous packs.  They will be producing a further pack later in the year with 12 new walks.  Also the new Sefton Spring Walking and Cycling newsletter is now available from the library and we have some copies

Nordic Walking: Christmas walk

The final Nordic walk of 2018 took place tonight with 16 walkers taking their poles around Maghull to view the Christmas lights. With antlers, Santa hats, and various Xmas head gear donned the group made a festive sight, stopping for a photo in front of a particularly lovely garden display. At the end of the walk the poles were stashed and we retired to Brenda’s house for the traditional Christmas drinks and supper. The walks resume on Monday 7th January at 10:15 for the morning walk, or Monday 14th January at 6:30pm  for the evening walk. Both walks start from Maghull Leisure Centre.

Nordic walking

Eight U3A members recently took part in the free Nordic walk training provided by Sefton Council. This training costs the council £70 per person. To date only one of the people trained has taken part in a walk. This is a waste of council money and may prevent the U3A getting places in the future. It is important to consolidate the learning gained at the training by taking part in a regular walk. The health benefits are tremendous too!  Walks are available on Monday mornings (fortnightly) at 10:15 am from Maghull Leisure Centre. Next walk is on 25th June. This is 60 minute walk. There is also a weekly walk on Monday evening, 6:30  from Lydiate scout hut for 90 minutes. There is no need to book for the walks, just turn up 10 mins before walk commences. Poles are available to use.

Christmas Nordic Walk

Members of the Nordic walking group took to the streets of Maghull last night,  suitably attired in festive wear, to complete the annual tour of the locality viewing the Christmas garden decorations. I have to admit there did appear to be some bemused motorists, and the one who stopped to ask us for directions looked extremely confused! Following the walk we returned to the lovely home of Brenda and John, where we were extremely well fed and watered. Thanks to both of them for their hospitality. Special thanks to Ian Gent, who was not able to join us last night, who along with Brenda and John, have led the Nordic walkers many miles during 2017.The walks resume on 8th January, 6:30 pm at the Baptist Church. New walkers are welcome but must have completed the Active Sefton Nordic walk training first.
