The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night

Book club 2 met on Friday June 13th to discuss Mark Haddon’s book,’ The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time.’ Only two of the group did not enjoy the book which explores the world of fifteen year old Christopher Boone and his adventures investigating the death of his neighbour’s dog. During his investigation, he discovers the truth about his departed mother and ends up finding his way to London in search of her.

Christopher is clearly on the autistic spectrum, highly intelligent and logical, but unable to relate closely to others or interpret their behaviour. His closest friends are his teacher Siobhan and his pet rat Toby who lives in his pocket. The story describes the boy’s reactions when his parents betray his trust as their marriage falls apart.

The reader’s sympathy for him is engaged throughout and we share his sense of achievement when at the end of the book he passes his A level Mathematics and looks forward to more intellectual success.

This was judged a rewarding read by the group as a whole.

We will read next ‘Hamnet’ by Maggie O Farrell. We continue to enjoy our venue at the Hare and Hounds.

Britt Marie was Here

Ten members of Book Club 2 met on Friday May 9th to discuss the book ‘Britt Marie was Here’ by Fredrik Backman, the New York Times best selling Swedish author. Once again we had a lively discussion as opinions ranged from hating the book to loving it. Britt Marie finds herself alone after years of an oppressive marriage and we are led inside her mind as she gradually breaks out of the shackles of her childhood and thoughtless mistreatment as a wife. She is set free by her chance employment in a depressed town, which itself comes to life by its contact with her.
Our average score was eight, and we can recommend it as a book that’s not easy to get into but with perseverance becomes very absorbing, with lots of humour , sympathetic characterisation ( and some pleasing references to Liverpool Football Club! )
