Pure Brilliance @ Lady Lever, Wed.November 2nd

This exquisite exhibition of jewellery will mesmerise visitors to Lady Lever Art Gallery this autumn as part of the gallery’s centenary year celebrations.

Pure Brilliance: The Boodles Story will showcase the jewellery brand’s 200 year story and show how Liverpool has helped shape the company’s growth, from a family jewellery business to purveyors of some of the most stunning jewels in the world.

See how the heritage of Liverpool’s vibrant and creative jewellery industry in the late 19th century created a market for good quality jewellery and metalwork, for which Boodles soon acquired a reputation.

We are doing self guided visit to this brilliant exhibition , no tours on offer.

Wednesday November 2nd  call into u3a Tuesday  to book.

Ladybird Exhibition – Williamson

We had a wonderful tour given by Niall  Hodson from Williamson Gallery, Birkenhead. His enthusiasm is infectious. Even though this is probably one of the most inaccessible galleries we visit , the effort was worthwhile.

If you want nostalgia this is for you. The Ladybird books are very collectable so if you have some hidden away, hang on to them. So much personal information available about each artists contribution.

On view until September 10th, it’s a must to visit, only three venues  included in England so far and its FREE. Next stop,  Northumberland in 2024

Take care – Maureen

Lovely Lytham

We had a lovely tour of  Lytham St Annes Beautiful Byzantine Church, ( grade two listed )  welcomed by Jan and Janet with tea and biscuits.

The windows tell  the story of the church, from the humble beginnings to present day.

After a nice lunch in the West Wing of Lytham Hall, we had an extensive tour of the many art works by two well informed guides.

The last part of this eclectic day was an art trail around the ground aided with a map, to spot the transport posters  (twelve in total) which all had  ubiquitous sunrays  across the Fylde coast.

There is a nice tea room,, plants for sale and antiques area

The exhibition is on until September 30th

Stramblers Lydiate Loop 18/08/2022

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Eighteen stramblers met at the Weld Blundell to walk the Lydiate Loop, hoping to finish before the afternoon’s forecast rain. We took Pilling Lane to reach the Leeds Liverpool Canal and went south on the towpath to Bells Lane. After a short distance we turned into the field and crossed a bridge over Maghull Brook to emerge on to Green Lane. Passing the “toy soldier” Queen’s Guard we made our way to the Cheshire Lines path and followed it for a mile and a quarter before making our way through fields to Southport Road. We crossed the road and walked through Our Lady’s Church grounds to Hall Lane. Leaving the lane, we passed “The Jumps” horse race training track coming back to the canal. After a short break, we followed the towpath back to the Mersey Boat Club and took Pilling Lane back to the Weld Blundell. With even a few sunny spells, we had missed the rain and were ready for our lunch.

Thanks to Anne for organising (and re-organising) the walk and meals.

New Day Trip

We will start our trip today by crossing the Menai Straits onto the Isle of Anglesey. Our first visit will be to the popular seaside resort of Beaumaris which together with all its’ attractions makes it an extremely popular destination.  With its’ mix of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture and its’ great unfinished masterpiece, Beaumaris Castle, parts of which date back to 1294, it is a lovely place to visit.  Stroll through the town, walk along the front and along the pier, admiring the wonderful views across the Straits to Snowdonia. There is a Gaol and a Courthouse you may like to visit. Good selection of shops, tea rooms etc.  Then we will cross back to the mainland to Bangor to visit the fantasy neo Norman Penrhyn Castle. Originally built by Lord Penrhyn and now owned by the National Trust, it is built on the fortunes made from the Jamaican Slave Trade and the nearby slate Quarries. Interesting interior, lovely gardens, a small railway museum highlighting the work done by the railway in the slate quarries. No expense was spared when building and designing the interior. Plenty of picnic sites and nice Cafe. For the more energetic some nice walks.

When? Wed. 2lst September 2022.  Depart 8.30am  Ret.6pm.  Price: National Trust Members £16. Non National Trust Members £29. Payment in full would be appreciated.  Seats will be on sale at our table on Tuesday 16th August 2022
