Day Trip – Guru Nanak Gurdwara & Jewellery Quarter Museum

An 8,.30am start and beautiful sunshine started our visit to Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick.  We had an uneventful journey – if you don;’t count the miles of smart motorway speed limits on the M6.  On arrival at this, the largest Gurdwara in Europe we were warmly greeted and appropriately suited but not booted eg. head coverings and no shoes, were ushered in to this beautiful Temple for an interesting talk and opportunity for a question session.  It was an amazing insight into a completely different culture. Sikhs are very welcoming regardless of faith etc. Everyone we met was calm, peaceful, very polite and very helpful. We attended Langa – this is counted as a blessing and food is provided all over the world free of charge, every day and we wondered how lines of people were able to easily squat on the floor to eat their meal. After bidding farewell to this peaceful area we set off for the Jewellery Quarter Museum.Smith and Pepper who owned the factory could not have known the legacy they left when they closed the factory and stopped production.  It is like a time warp and an indication of how different working conditions were then and now.  Very interesting guides who also gave a demonstration.  We finished with tea/biscuits and then set off on the tortuous journey home on the M6.  However, it was a good day with lots of surprising information. We met some lovely people and the sun shone all day.   .

Day Trips – Christmas Lunch

We will start our day with a visit to the beautiful and award winning model village of Port Sunlight.  With over  30 Architects showcasing their designs – there is an intriguing range of styles. The houses are highly sought after to-day.  It’s a lovely place to wander and attracts visitors from all over the world. There are fine open spaces, the Lady Lever Art Gallery (free) with all its’ treasures, a lovely cafe and shop and a family owned Garden Centre, which will be decorated in all its’ Christmas splendour and it also has a nice cafe. You can also visit the Museum and Garden Village (small charge) Then we are off to Llyndir Hall Hotel, Rossett, owned by the Hallmark Hotel Group, set in 5 acres of gardens on the North Wales Borders.  The Hotel has a reputation for good food, comfort and we will partake in a relaxed 3 course meal followed by tea/coffee/mince pies

New Day Trip

Where better to be than the Lake District in Autumn?  We will be visiting Bowness which, until 1847 when the railways started, was a fishing village.  The Victorians quickly made it in to what it is to-day – a thriving tourist destination.  There are walks by the Lake where you can watch the world go by or book a boat trip, museums, most famously, the home of Beatrix Potter, galleries, shops, cafes and pubs. Some of the lovely hotels were originally the private homes of successful Manchester businessmen.  Time to browse, have a coffee, lunch and take in the lovely scenery. Then we will be off to visit the Blackwell Arts and Crafts House which is set in lovely gardens with stunning views of Lake Windermere.  It was originally the holiday home of Sir Edward Holt, a successful Manchester brewer.  It is now a place to explore, soak up the atmosphere and have an introductory talk to this special property.  We will finish with a cream tea.

When ?  Wed. 16th October 2019.  Dep.9.15am   Ret. 6pm  Price: £23 inc. intro. talk and cream tea. Seats will be on sale at our table on Tuesday 30TH July 2019.
