12 Intrepid ramblers set out from the Spread Eagle Inn on Thursday to walk the 6 mile circular trail to Beacon Hill. The day turned out to be one where we encountered all four seasons in one day including a fierce wind at the trig point that threatened to blow us over the edge……needless to say we didn’t linger long!
9 hardy ( or maybe foolhardy) souls set out yesterday for an 8 mile ramble around the Stocks reservoir in the Gisburn Forest just over the Yorkshire Border. There should have been 11 of us but 2 got lost on the way and eventually did their own 5 mile walk in the area! 🙂 Setting off in reasonably dry weather we followed well marked paths through the forest owned by United Utilities which is the forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty. Sadly the low cloud and general mizzle stopped any far reaching views but we all agreed on a clear bright sunny day the area would be beautiful. Continue reading
For our February walk 13 members on the Ramblers Group completed a circular walk of just over 9 miles around Penwortham near Preston.
Our walk, which was favoured with dry and mild weather, took in parks, a nature reserve and a section of the Ribble Way on (mostly) good footpaths and quiet lanes.
After the walk the group enjoyed a welcome lunch at The Fleece Inn at Penwortham.
14 very hardy members of the Rambling group took an 8 mile meander on the Wirral yesterday. Spirits were high on the train at the prospect of a bracing walk in the fresh air, but soon plummeted as the train emerged from the Mersey tunnels to find the weather on the Wirral was inclement to say the least! The first ramble of the year will be a 8-9 mile circular walk in the Hoylake area. This will be on Thursday 6th January commencing at 11am from Hoylake. The route takes in fields, tracks and some roads and will inevitably be muddy given the recent rains. Please wear appropriate footwear. A meal has been booked at a local pub at the end of the walk. Regular walkers already have full details, but if anyone else wishes to join us please contact me by email before the day, (pollypaws 46@gmail.com) All participants are asked to take a lateral flow test the evening before the ramble.
22 of us took our monthly ramble yesterday followed by a Christmas meal Setting out from Town Green station we crossed the park then used Ron Gordon Way ( previously known as footpath no 10) to St Michaels Church Aughton. Bypassing the Stanley Arms, much to the consternation of some of the men, we took the now unmarked footpath, which actually goes up someone’s drive, to exit at Northway. Continue reading
13 members of the Rambling group met at Astley Hall near Chorley this morning to undertake the Chorley Circuit. Led by Ann and Peter we set off promptly and started to explore the countryside, canals and parks surrounding the Lancashire town of Chorley. The route was said to take a little over 9 miles. but as is usual on our rambles a couple of wrong turns saw us complete a circuit of a little over 11 1/2 miles! Continue reading
15 members of the Rambling group set off this morning from Ryal Fold near Burnley to walk up to the 123 year old Jubillee Tower situated on the moors above the town. Starting from the little hamlet we descended along some steep paths to the banks of the Upper Roddlesworth Reservoir. At this point a light drizzle started and our hopes of a dry walk were in doubt. 17 members of the rambling group met today at Northwich for a yomp around the Cheshire Countryside. Unfortunately we got off to a bad start with two people being delayed on the M6 and another person giving up altogether as he was gridlocked in traffic. Thankfully the walk had been recced by two people so the group set off with Ralph in the lead, whilst Alan waited behind for the latecomers, who joined the walk part way through having found a shortcut! 21 Members of the Rambling group had a great walk in the Rainford area today. Led by Ann and Peter Willox we began and ended the walk at the Derby Arms pub. Following local paths we soon walked out of the village and completed a circuit of a little under 8 miles. Having called in at the Sidings nature reserve some of the group took the time for a brief refreshment stop whilst viewing the info boards about the colliery previously located on the site. The walk took us across lovely open countryside using field tracks and we were lucky just to get caught in one very brief shower instead of the downpours that had been predicted. Returning back to the start point we enjoyed a very sociable meal in the pub, a perfect end to a great ramble, and it was lovely to welcome new members today.
