We hope you have had a great Summer break and are eager and ready to start a new season of presentations in September with the following schedule planned:

If you have an interest in technology and science then give us a try. The venue is Kensington House from 2:30.  All u3a members are welcome.

New Supper Club date for September

The next Supper Club will be at The Cote Restaurant in Liverpool city centre opposite John Lewis. Thursday 4th September at 6.30pm. Choose between 2 Courses £21.50; 3 Courses £25.50. Call in to the U3A coffee morning on Tuesday to choose your menu and pay in full. Only 25 places available.

Bridgewater RHS Gardens and Fryers Garden Centre

A garden visit to Bridgewater Gardens on Wednesday 3rd September 2025. the former site of Worsley New Hall in Salford, a heritage landscape that’s transformed into an iconic RHS garden. Bridgewater is 5th garden and one of the largest and most ambitious gardening projects undertaken in Europe.  The award winning garden designers have brought the garden to life.  Bridgewater also has a cafe overlooking Victoria Meadow and offers seasonal food and tea/coffee along with an interesting gift shop.  We will first visit Fryers Garden Centre in Knutsford, which has a large range of indoor and outdoor plants and is the home of beautiful roses. They also have a cafe offering food and tea/coffee. This should be an enjoyable day out

The cost  £26 – payable by cheque preferably.        Depart Maghull Square  9.15am

Return Maghull Square   6pm

Fountains Abbey / Studley Royal Water Garden

Arrangements are in hand to visit the above NT property on 18th September

We will travel by luxury coach (8.00am departure) have a guided tour of the Abbey , time to have lunch/snack (not included) and then time to tour the water garden

Cost is £27 for National Trust members and £47 for non members

Turner Always Contemporary, November 21st

We are very fortunate to book one of the few Curator talks at the Walker on

Turner: Always Contemporary

The exhibition @ Walker Art Gallery

This exhibition will mark 250 years since the birth of JMW Turner, exploring both the artist’s own work and his enduring impact on later generations of artists. Turner: Always Contemporary will include National Museums Liverpool’s collection of Turner’s oil paintings, works on paper and prints, alongside modern and contemporary artworks that delve into themes of travel, landscape, and artistic experimentation. A number of important and influential loaned works will also feature.

It will offer fresh perspectives on Turner and his legacy, highlighting how he grappled with issues that remain relevant today: climate change, immigration, tourism, and the role of the artist. Alongside Turner’s works, visitors will encounter pieces by Claude Monet, Ethel Walker, Bridget Riley and many more, bringing together 250 years of art to examine Turner’s timeless appeal.

Calke Abbey Ticknall Derbyshire 28th August

Arrangements are in hand to visit the above  National Trust Baroque – style Mansion with peeling paintwork and abandoned rooms portraying the dramatic decline of a Country House Estate

Explore the tunnels between the brewhouse and the cellar where you can see large mash tuns which produced the beer

Explore the ancient parkland , listen for wildlife and soak up the fantastic  views along the way and much more

Return travel by luxury coach , entry to the Mansion (self guided tour) , tunnels and parkland

Cost is £22 for National Trust members and £43 for non members , (a place will only be guaranteed upon full payment)

T+S does Plague

Our Technology and Science group looked at the history and science of ‘plague’ at the end of June. We covered several pandemics around the world but, because the presenter is squeamish, the gory details were only scraped over.

But Channel 5 has given us the chance to relive the 1665 English events.
