Book Club Trip to Bronte Country (Haworth)

Join some of the members of the Book Club on a trip to the birthplace of the Bronte sisters, Haworth on Thursday 11th June. We have chosen to celebrate the writing of the Bronte sisters this year. Haworth is an attractive village with a steep, cobbled Main Street where you can browse the many independent shops, bars and restaurants.

Visit the Bronte Parsonage, the former home of the sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne now a Museum dedicated to their lives. You can also visit St. Michaels and All Angels Church where Patrick Bronte was curate.

The Bronte Waterfalls are 30 minutes from the village or take one of the walking routes around the village that inspired Wuthering Heights. These routes can be muddy and slippy so appropriate walking shoes are required.

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway has a station in Haworth where you can board a steam train for a round trip to Keighley. The trains run quite frequently from the village and a Rover ticket costs £19.20.

Cost of the trip from Maghull Square by coach is £23 (dependant on 30 participants) and the cost of the Parsonage Museum is £13 for those who want to visit as a group. You can book individually if you prefer.
Book and pay for the trip at the Coffee Morning

Writing for Pleasure Group

Today six of us met (with one other there in spirit!) for our April meeting. Our topic this month was “The Commute”, a topic that we thought we might struggle with.

As it turned out we rose to challenge beautifully and produced some very varied pieces. It’s a shame we can’t share all seven with you but the one chosen for this month can now be read right here. It’s by Jenny Challinor and it’s called “The Olden Days”.

Next month we’re trying out a different approach – how it will turn out, we’ll just have to wait to see!!

We met at St Michael’s Station for today’s walk round Sefton Park. It was a bright sunny day and we made our way along the bustling Lark Lane where the pavement cafés and restaurants were already busy. We crossed into Sefton Park, where the perimeter path took us round its edge. The obelisk at the main park entrance is a memorial to Samuel Smith, a Liverpool cotton trader, a social reformer, MP and philanthropist. The Prevention of Cruelty to Children Act of 1889 included reforms he had advocated. In memory of Continue reading

Members of the Architecture for Fun group had a great day at the iconic Crowne Plaza hotel at Speke today. The grade II* listed terminal building was converted into a hotel in 2001 and the old airport apron is now home to Speke Aerodrome Heritage Group who hosted our visit today. We were treated to a guided tour of the art deco hotel which has been sympathetically restored by the current owners. Continue reading

Spital to Port Sunlight 23/04/26

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A Baker’s Dozen of Stramblers took the train to Spital for today’s walk. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and we set off in glorious sunlight. (Appropriate as we’d finish the walk in Port Sunlight). Leaving the station, we walked along Spital Road and a military plane passed overhead. It was an Airbus A400M Atlas turbo prop which makes regular training flights to LJA from Brize Norton. Continuing downhill, we took a left at the Bromborough Road roundabout. After a short uphill stretch, we joined Continue reading
