Festive Break – Melrose – Trips News – 10th November

The following trips are to be organised for our short break

Day Trip Tues. this will be a full day visit to Edinburgh. We will have a guided tour on our coach lasting approx 1 hour. Then we will have time to visit this ancient Scottish City at our leisure. There is so much to see/do and a comprehensive list of where to go/what to do/costs will be provided in your itinerary. You will be spoilt for choice for coffee shops/eating places.

Day Trip Thurs. Today we will visit the Visitor Centre at Abbotsford House, which is the home of Sir Walter Scott. Our Hotel, Waverley Castle, which is named after probably his most famous novel Waverley, is on the edge of the Abbotsford Estate.  Time to investigate and for the energetic some lovely walks. We will then visit the interesting Chain Bridge Honey Farm near Berwick on Tweed. Plenty to see and they sell a range of honey and products produced on the Farm.  Then if time allows on to Eyemouth a busy traditional fishing village with an interesting harbour and an amazing memorial dedicated to a fishing boats tragedy in the 1800’s.

Added info re John Moore Painting Prize 17th October

We have been offered an introductory talk with Q and A at Walker Art  Gallery for above visit.

This will be £110 for a group,  about £7 each depending on numbers.

I think it’s a good idea, as we are all of differing opinions about the art work on display. It would shed some light on reasons why, what, etc.

Let me know if it is of interest or we can do our usual self guided visit. Free

On a warm sunny day 12 members of the Rambling Group set off for the delights of the Cheshire countryside for our latest ramble. Leaving wet Merseyside behind we assembled at the village of Pickmere and coats were taken off and stowed away into rucksacks. as there was no sign of rain and the sun was peeking though the clouds. Situated between Knutsford and Northwich the little town is surrounded by lush green fields, rolling countryside and and has won many prizes in the past for being not only a picturesque well kept place, but an area with great community spirit. As we walked  we were greeted by two workers who were using an intriguing floating contraption to clear a pond of what appeared to be the menace of Japanese knotweed. Continue reading
