T+S – Stone age Sefton

28 members attended the Wednesday afternoon meeting for a talk by Molly Toal, the Communications and Engagement Officer of the Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve, part of the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside.

A fascinating story and laptop presentation of the geography, history and archaeology of the Lunt Meadows ‘dig’ gave us a vivid insight into our local prehistory back over 9000 years.

Later this year we will be taking a guided tour of the ‘dig’ so watch this space for news. The presentation was ‘free’.  A donation of £50 has been made.

Our next meeting is Feb 9th with Colin discussing computer security.

NEW DAY TRIP

Welcome to 2022.  We will travel on our first trip of the year to the historic City of Lancaster.  This is a heritage City, set on the banks of the River Lune. It is a compact, quirky place to visit with something for everyone to see.  Museums, Galleries, vibrant coffee culture, quaint alleys to wander down, up to the minute shopping.  It also has a bustling Charter Market which will be on the day of our visit.  Lots of choice for coffee and lunch  it is after all a busy University City.  Atkinsons famous for their tea blends and coffees has its headquarters here and freshly ground coffee in their cafes.  Then we are off to the impressive Castle which has stood guard over Lancaster for centuries.  It belongs to the Queen,  the Duchy of Lancaster. Courts are still held here and It has held many famous trials, the best known of which is the Witches of Pendle over 400 years ago.  We will have a guided tour including part of the prison which was in use as recently as 2011 and hear all about its’ rich historic past.  Time for a cuppa before departing for home

A visit has been arranged for Wednesday 9th March 2022 to RHS Bridgewater. The former site of Worsely New Hall in Salford, is a heritage landscape that’s been transformed into a RHS garden.  Opened in 2021, RHS Garden Bridgewater is the 5th RHS garden and one of the largest and most gardening project in Europe.  Landscape architect, Tom Stuart-Smith created the masterplan and fantastic Bridgewater team, alongside award winning garden designers, have brought the garden to life.  Bridgewater also has a cafe overlooking Victoria Meadow and offers seasonal food hot & cold, tea/coffee etc.     We will also visit Bents garden centre, Warrington for a browse and hopefully get some “spring inspiration ” its a fantastic garden centre, and maybe time for a morning tea/coffee.  This should be a wonderful day out.
