Understanding Dementia

65 U3A members recently heard Dr Josh McCauley from Home Instead, a local care provider, deliver a talk on the topic of dementia. He spoke about the different types of dementia, including the fact that the term dementia is an umbrella term for many forms of the illness, with Alzheimer’s disease being one of the types of dementia commonly diagnosed.

He informed us of many statistics including the fact that 225,000 people are diagnosed with dementia annually, adding  that the risk of dementia can be reduced by regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, staying mentally active by completing crosswords, puzzles and other stimulating activities. He praised the work of the U3A as being an exemplar to achieving a healthy physical and mental balance.

The next speaker meeting will be on Tuesday 5th April at 11am. Details of this to follow.
