Sunday Strollers 17th March
15 walkers took the wind head on in Southport today. The sun did come out and the rain stayed away but the cobwebs were definitely blown away! The fish and chip lunch went down very well after our 3 mile steady walk. We all agreed that we had never seen waves so high in the lake in Southport before it looked like the Mersey!. You can see in the picture above. Also we were all happy to following the notice that said “No Swimming” Thank you to Margaret McLoughlin for leading the walk.
There is no walk next month as it is due on Easter Sunday. Our next walk is on 19th May when we will be going to Chester. This will be more of “A Who Done It” . We will find the answers to clues which can be found around Chester. This is something new we are willing to try. We will finish up having lunch and hopefully we will be successful in solving all the clues. Travelling arrangements will be posted on this site nearer the time.
History for Fun March Meeting
Tony Snape delivered a very entertaining talk on Stephen and Matilda, with all the twists and turns that happened during that period. Who needs Game of Thrones? Truth is certainly stranger than fiction!

Sandstone Trail Ramble
7 Ramblers completed a 9 mile trek yesterday on part of the Sandstone trail in Cheshire. Starting from the uniquely named Copper Mines Lane we spent 4 hours walking part of the linear route which is one of Julia Bradbury’s top 100 walks. Passing through the village of Burwardsley, we negotiated paths which were ankle deep in mud to ascend to the trig point at Rawhead, the highest point of the trail, at 746 feet above sea level.In spite of the recent rain, the day was sunny with bright skies, which meant we had amazing views across the Cheshire Plain into Wales from the tops of the hills and a great view of Beeston Castle from the valley floor..The varied route took us along country lanes, woodland paths and several steep ascents, which made everyone (except Alan) realise how unfit we all are after the winter period when walks have been more sedate. Returning to our start point we had a quick journey to the Bickerton Poacher, where a lovely late lunch and welcome drinks were thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to Alan for the recce and the great walk. Our next ramble is on Thursday 4th April, when we will be walking in the Douglas Valley.(This is an amendment of the advertised programme) Details will be posted in due course

Thank you again to all our members who have so generously sponsored Maria Mullin to run in the London Marathon in April to raise money for Dementia Revolution.
So far you have raised £818 to help fund research to fight this dreadful disease.
She will be running in memory of her grandad George who enjoyed many happy years in our U3A before he died.

New Group? Calligraphy Meeting 19/03
One of our members has donated a beginners book on Calligraphy and some starter sets. We asked at the coffee morning yesterday if anyone is interesting in having a go. We do not have a leader so it would be a group of people learning as they go, Four people have already shown interest . So if you are interested please text or ring me (Brenda McKenzie) on 07900525222. I plan to hold a meeting at the coffee morning next week at 10.45 at the Group Support desk for interested people, to see if we can move this group forward.
Bird Watching

Thursday 11th April 10am, Meresands nature reserve, Rufford, L40 1TG. A walk around the reserve. Plenty of bird hides. Toilets. Car Parking charges apply. Contact June Avery if you want to come along.
I will be arranging a visit to Wigan Flashes with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. I am waiting for them to get back to me with a date. Wigan Flashes is a large area of wetland formed from previous coal extraction
I am also arranging a visit to RSPB Leighton Moss, Silverdale, near Morecambe in May. Given the location I will hire a mini bus but I can only do this if enough people are interested. I am waiting for the RSPB to confirm the dates they can give us a guided tour.
Law for Fun UPDATE
The Law for Fun group is now full. 50 people have purchased tickets to attend the first meeting of this group on 21st March at Lydiate Village Hall Lambshear Lane 2-4pm. Only people with tickets can attend the first meeting of this group. We may be able to have a second group in the future if we have enough people.
Around the world in Maths 4 Fun
We had a very enjoyable afternoon today discovering links between Newcastle and Valencia, Madrid and New York, Tokyo and Adelaide, and Montevideo and Cape Town.
Our voyage around Latitude and Longitude revived some long forgotten facts about circles and angles, and having tackled time zones and the International Date Line, we think we now all know our place in the world.
We welcomed some new members, and started with warm-up ice-breakers such as:
A family gathering had a mother, father, daughter, son, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, brother, sister and cousin. If there were only 4 people there, who were they?
If you can’t work it out, ask one of the maths group or come along and join us next time, Wednesday 3rd April at Kensington House at 2.30 when we will be looking at Strategies for Sudoku, Kakuro and other fiendish puzzles.
