Wine Tasting – 28th July

Winetime at Scatchards – Come and Taste the wines from Southern France 

There will be 6 wines (2 whites , 1 Cotes de Provence (do not miss this) and 3 reds) , a full explanation will be given on each wine and its origin by Jon Atkinson

There will be charcuterie , cheeses , olives  and biscuits to enjoy with your wines

The cost is £9 for the tasting (similar tastings in town could coast up to £45)

There is also a “return taxi transfer if required ” from Maghull Square leaving at approx. 6.40 pm to arrive at the tasting for 7.00pm , cost is £8

Cliffords Tower is a clover shaped motte and bailey fortification  built by William the Conqueror in 1068 as a base for controlling the North of England

A recent £5 million project has been completed providing new internal walkways up to a new roof deck giving a 360 degrees view of the whole of York including the Minster

English Heritage members gain free access

Jorvik Viking Museum is a museum and visitor attraction containing lifelike mannequins and life size dioramas depicting Viking life in the city. Visitors are taken through the dioramas in small carriages equipped with speakers.

Theatre Group

Betty! A sort of Musical (about Betty Boothroyd)

This show is on at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. It is at 2.30 in the afternoon on 10th December.

Due to high demand the theatre is only giving us a short period of time to sell  tickets costing £37.00 in the stalls.  Therefore the closing date is Tuesday 12th July.  Transport will be arranged for this trip at an additional cost. Please come to the Theatre Desk to book.

The Everyman Theatre Panto will be Red Riding Hood. An afternoon performance starting at 1.30 pm on Thursday 5th January.

Tickets will  be £17.00 and are selling fast. The theatre has given us a closing date of Tuesday 26th July. 

Hutton -in-the- Forest (Cumbria) & BeetonNurseries

A Garden Visit on Wednesday, 3rd August has been arranged to Hutton-in-the-Forest (Cumbria)  The first known historic reference to Hutton – in- the -Forest was in 1292 when King Edward 1 visited. The present owner Lord Inglewood who lives today at Hutton with his wife Cressida and their family.  The house is surrounded by spectacular gardens and grounds which were laid out in the 17th century.  The walled garden has a beautiful flower garden with herbaceous plants, annuals and roses. Splendid Topiary restored in the 19th century. The lower garden has ponds and a wild flower meadow. There is a woodland walk featuring many mature hardwood trees some more than 200 years old. They have a tearoom serving hot and cold meals, cakes etc, tea/cofee.

On our way we will stop at Beetham Nurseries for a comfort stop and maybe a morning tea/coffee if you wish.   Cost of trip  £27   Leave Maghull Square 8.30am and Return Maghull Square 6pm approx

Cliffords Tower trip – July

Members to note that English Heritage members do not need to pay for entrance to Cliffords Tower. The cost for English Heritage members will therefore be £31.50
