Please note that we will be meeting on Friday 1st November a week later than usual. We will be visiting Ormskirk and meeting from 1230 in the Court Leet. After food and a couple of ales we will visit the newly refurbished Buck I’th Vine just 2 minutes away and then back down the street to Tap Room No 12. We will probably head over to the Cricketers before heading home. The picture below was taken in the Helter Skelter in Frodsham on last month’s day out. Despite torrential rain most of the day we managed to keep dry, outside that is!
On Friday 27th September we will be visiting Frodsham. We will be catching the 1136 train from Lime Street Station (Platform 8). If you would like to have breakfast beforehand please meet from 1030 in The North Western. Frodsham is ideal for a pub crawl as all the pubs are within about 5 minutes walk. Also there is another famous pie shop (Cowards) and the steak and kidney is the best I have tasted in years! Hope to see most of you then. Cheers! Sue
The Real Ale Group has steadily increased in members and last week started a waiting list. The Group considered starting a second group but we would need to find a new leader to run this group and no one in the group was willing to do this. However, this could be an option if one of our members would be willing to lead a second group.
The group decided to increase the times they meet and instead of meeting once a month they would meet twice a month. The group then decided as many of the Real Ale events now include Gin Tasting they would have Real Ale on one of the meetings and Gin Tasting on the other. The ladies on the waiting list were invited to join the Gin Tasting meeting which starts next month, They have taken up the offer so the Group no longer has a waiting list.
We are always looking for new leaders if you think you could run a group come to the Group Support desk on a Tuesday morning or text Brenda McKenzie on 07900525222
July – This month’s meet up will actually take place on Saturday 3rd August. We will be visiting Connoisseur Brewery in St Helens and will be catching the 11:45 train from Lime Street. Those who would like breakfast beforehand please meet in the North Western Wetherspoons from 10:45. The Brewery has an open day on the first Saturday of each month and has a good selection of dark and light real ales and also the famous Burchall’s pork pies are available. If time allows we will also visit the Cricketers Pub.
August – We will be meeting on Friday 30th August from 12:00 in The Captain Alexander opposite James Street Station. This is the latest new Wetherspoons to open in Liverpool. Note the earlier meeting time, this is so we can hopefully get enough tables together for us all! From here we will visit a few other real ale pubs in the area.
A return to Chester on another sunny afternoon. Lunch in Wetherspoons ‘Bull and Stirrup’ before trying 2 Sam Smiths pubs, The Old Boot and The Falcon. Nice clean and traditional bars with a great pint of bitter for £2. Finally The Cellar, a more modern but still ‘real ale’ option. A great afternoon and home by 6.
After a quick lunch in Blacklers ‘Wetherspoons’ we headed for the Pen Factory. It has a nice airy space inside with a brick building surrounded courtyard outside, which, in bright sunshine was perfect for our group. Then on to The Grapes and finally The Dispensary. Another really easy afternoon and home by 6.
This month on the 28th June we will be going to Chester. To make the most of the day we will be taking the 11:01 train from Maghull Station (or 10:57 from Maghull North). We are due to arrive in Chester at 12:11 and we will then walk towards the centre and have lunch and beers in The Square Bottle (Wetherspoon). From here there are many great pubs including Ye Olde Boot Inn, Brewery Tap, Cross Keys and Pied Bull to name just a few! On the walk back to the train station we can visit The Cellar and The Deva Tap both new micro pubs. Cross fingers for good weather but either way it will be a top day out!
Our next Real Ale Meet Up will be Friday 31st May in Liverpool. Please meet from 1230 in Blacklers Wetherspoon on Great Charlotte St. We will have lunch here then walk up Mount Pleasant to the Pen Factory, on to Hard Times and Misery, Mackenzie’s and the Grapes. Look forward to seeing you all then. Sue Continue reading
Please note our April meet up will be on 3rd May in Formby and Freshfield. We will be catching the 1201 train from Maghull Station and will alight at Formby. We will make our way (walk or circular bus) to The Lifeboat (Wetherspoons). We can have lunch here and a couple of pints and then move on to the Freshfield and the Beer Station (next to Freshfield Station). As usual if anyone is running late please call my mobile 07801656570 and find out where we are. May’s Meet Up will be on Friday 31st, details to follow. Cheers, Sue
Having travelled to St Helens on our February meet up (photos below), this month we will be staying a bit closer to home. On 22nd March will be visiting the Ship Inn and Kings Arms in Haskayne and then the Scotch Piper, Weld Blundell and finally finishing in Maghull Cask. We will catch the 300 bus which passes the Alt around 12 noon. I will be catching the 1207 by High Pastures and we will alight in Haskayne and walk the short distance to the Ship Inn where we can have lunch. We will aim to arrive at Maghull Cask for opening time at 4pm
