Ramblers on Moel Fenlli

9 of the Ramblers group met today in North Wales to climb the slightly less popular Moel Fenlli rather than the very busy Moel Famau. Starting from The Druids Inn just beyond Loggerheads we did a 1.8 add on circular walk through some lovely forest and alongside a river where the wild garlic was very prolific.

Having picked up the rucksacks back at the cars we started a very long slow steady climb to go up onto the hills above the valley. The fields were covered with ewes and lambs of various sizes and it was great to see the way the ewes put themselves between their lambs and us to protect them from the interlopers. We stopped for lunch just beyond the main Moel Famu carpark before staring the climb to the top of the next peak. This proved to be a bad move as everyone was much slower having eaten lunch! However… we reached the half way point of the summit having mounted a series of very steep steps that our leader had neglected to tell us about! From this point the group split in two…with some staying on the lower path whilst  5 of us carried on up more steps and steep slopes to reach the actual summit of Moel Fenlli. As is often the case with our group we missed the correct path down to rendezvous with the others, so had an additional yomp back up to the top to locate the correct way down! Thankfully the weather was clear and sunny so the extra route wasn’t too arduous. From here we slipped and slid down a very steep scree path before eventually reaching the valley bottom and finishing the route across lovely green meadows. Having finished the 8 mile walk we had the obligatory drink at the Druid Inn sitting outside in the sunshine. Thanks to Ken for doing the recce and leading the walk through some stunning scenery.
