Foodie Group: Turning Japanese

The foodie group met today and it was great to welcome 3 new members, taking the number in the group up to 20. Following the theme of sampling cuisine from different countries it was turn of myself and Jill today to provide tasters from Japan. Jill unfortunately  was not able to attend but sent some delicious Japanese Mochi for us to sample. This is a Japanese rice cake which is pounded into a paste and then shaped. We tried some containing chocolate and also some with peanut butter centres  coated in coconut (which can be seen in the gallery), both of which were delicious.Prior to this we sampled Udon Noodle soup (link below), sushi ( both fish and vegetable) dipped in wasabi, soy and ginger dipping sauce, Salmon Teriyaki and Japanese sticky rice. It is helpful having a Japanese daughter in law who had given me a crash course in sushi making, and also educated me into the intricacies  of creating Japanese sticky rice without the aid of a traditional rice cooker. Judging by the empty plates and dishes the food was well received, with many of the group never having sampled Japanese food before.

We also took some time to discuss the social etiquette of using chopsticks, and looked at the differences between those of Japanese and Chinese origin.

Next months food foray is back to Europe with French cuisine on the menu, and I am reliably informed that escargot will be on the tasting table for those who dare!

New members are welcome to join us. 3rd Thursday in the month, St James’ church Hall, Green Lane Maghull. 10:30 -12md.
